The Presidential National Non-Communicable Diseases Commission (PNNCDC) met with a high-level team from the Ministry of Education to discuss how the two entities can collaborate to address the issue of childhood obesity.

Representing the PNNCDC were Dr. Holly Alexander, Chairman of PNNCDC and Dr. Grace White, Vice-Chairman of the PNNCDC. Dr. Alexander explained that the PNNCDC’s mandate is to tackle non-communicable diseases such diabetes, hypertension, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases.

She said that such diseases are becoming prevalent among younger persons and as such the Commission thought it best to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to engage students.

Minister of Education, Dr. the Hon. Nicolette Henry said that the Ministry is in support of the idea and advised that community participation and engagement is important and that the Ministry of Education is happy to be on-board to be an invaluable partner to the process.news 20200124 12

Also present at today’s meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Alfred King, Chief Education Officer (ag), Mrs. Ingrid Trotman and other senior officers within the Ministry.
