Commonwealth learning specialist pays a courtesy call on the Minister of Education

Minister of Education Dr. the Hon. Nicolette Henry was today paid a courtesy call from Dr Toney May, Commonwealth of Learning Specialist accompanied by General-Secretary of the UNESCO Secretariat in Guyana, Ms. Patrice LaFleur. The Commonwealth of Learning is an inter-governmental organisation based in Canada, with the Commonwealth being its parent organisation.

During the interface, Dr May and the Minister of Education (MoE) discussed areas of possible cooperation, with a view of sharing ideas and best practices. This will allow for the continued improvement of the education sector.news 20191104 7

The Learning Specialist was apprised of what is currently taking place within the sector. It was explained that the MoE is at present reforming the School Curriculum, taking a holistic approach to education, also addressing social issues within the school system.

Additionally, the use of smart classrooms and Information Communication Technology (ICT) to assist with learning was also discussed. In light of these discussions, Dr May explained that there will be a need for teachers support and training.news 20191104 9 Dr May believes this is imperative to ensure that the use of technology within the education sector is without major issues.

Further, the Learning Specialist explained that his organisation will be ready to assist when the need arises with regards to training and support of teachers in the field of ICT.

Dr May is on a two-day visit to meet with officials, as he conducts a needs analysis of the education sector. He is expected to meet with the Chief Education Officer, officials from the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), the University of Guyana (UG) and the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD).
