… as MoE hosts 4th annual signing Bee competition

The Ministry of Education (MoE) Special Education Needs (SEN) Unit, today hosted its fourth annual Signing Bee competition at the Theatre Guild in Georgetown. The event forms part of this year’s calendar of activities for Education Month, celebrated under the theme “Education: the key to national development”.
The Signing Bee competition is a unique opportunity for persons with special needs to participate actively in Education month 2019. The competition involved children identifying and then spelling the word that represented the item displayed using sign language. news 20190920 2
Delivering remarks at the opening of the competition was Deputy Chief Education Officer - Administration (DCEO-A), Mrs. Ingrid Trotman who told the gathering that the MoE has embarked on a sustained effort to ensure that everyone including children with special needs have equal educational opportunities.
“There is no limit to what any of you can do”. Ms Trotman reminded the participants and other children that the sky is the limit and that they should not limit themselves.
Additionally, Mrs Trotman said that the children’s participation in the competition is a demonstration of the Ministry’s commitment to improving the delivery of SEN. The DCEO-A further stated that the success of the participants will inspire others to greater accomplishments.
According to Ms. Savvie Hopkinson, National Special Education Needs (SEN) Coordinator, the competition is evidence of the profound ongoing changes in the education system. Ms Hopkinson believes that the new approach to SEN by the MoE is a clear indication that the MoE has a focus on holistic educational outcomes.news 20190920 4
The event was attended by the Chief Education Officer Dr Marcel Hutson and other senior education officials. This year’s competition has seen participation from special schools nationwide such as the David Rose Special School, New Amsterdam Special Needs School, Diamond Special Needs School, Beterverwagting Primary School's SEN Department, Schoonard and Linden Special schools.
Following the competition, the results are as follows:


Students Category 1 age 7-11 years
1st place - Abigail Jairam Region 6
2nd place - Deon Smith - Georgetown
3rd place - Troy Scott - Region 10

Students Category 2 ages 12 - 16 years
1st place - Kacia Miller Georgetown
2nd place - Faith Bennett - Georgetown
3rd place - Satesh Raj Kumar- Region 6

Teachers category
1st place - Yvonne Deonarine Region 6
2nd place - Fiona Fraser - Region 3
3rd place - Orissa Sinclair Region 6
