Representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) met with the Ministry of Education to present a brief on findings following a needs assessment that was done in the sub-region of Mabaruman, Region One.

Today, representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) met with the Ministry of Education to present a brief on findings following a needs assessment that was done in the sub-region of Mabaruman, Region One.

The team met with the Minister of Education, Dr. the Hon. Nicolette Henry, Chief Education Officer (CEO), Dr. Marcel Hutson, Senior Secondary Education Officer, Mr. Ameer Ali and Technical Facilitator, Mr. Kerwin Jacobs.

Presenting the findings of the needs assessment were representatives from Voices GY who conducted the assessment on behalf of the UNHCR.

Some of the major issues that were highlighted today following the study were the existence of a language barrier, cultural integration and infrastructure.

As such, recommendations were made by the UNHCR and the Voices GY representatives to address these issues so that there can be improved access and quality of education in the communities that are located in that region.

Minister Henry along with the CEO and the technical officers thanked the UNHCR and Voices GY for their extensive and informative reporting.

All stakeholders committed today to collaborate further in order to strategically address the issues highlighted so that the best possible outcomes for the education sector and the people of Guyana can be realised using the available resources.
