Hinterland teachers undergo home to school transition training

The Ministry of Education in collaboration with UNICEF planned and executed a two-day training workshop for all nursery teachers in Region 9.

The workshop was designed to bridge the gap between home to school transition and to examine the emergent literacy skills that should be taught to children for them to achieve early success in reading and writing.

The workshop was facilitated by Ms Ninian Blair, Survival and Adolescent Health Consultant at UNICEF and Ms Samantha Williams, ACEO ( N ) 20181122 11

A total of ninety-five (95) teachers attended the workshop which was divided into two phases. Phase 1 was conducted in Lethem during the period October 31 to November 3 and attracted teachers of South Rupununi and Central Lethem. Phase 2 was conducted in Annai during the period November 7-10 and attracted teachers of North 20181122 12

The teachers were exposed to sessions that focused on Nutrition and Learning, The First 1000 days of Development, Positive Discipline, Understanding the Child’s Health Passport and Emergent Reading and Writing skills.

Teachers in their evaluation expressed sincere gratitude for the workshop and were motivated to return to their respective communities to practice the strategies learnt or to share information with parents through Parent Conferences or Meetings.
