Education Month continues with Region Three’s Career Fair

The Department of Education, Region Three, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara held its second annual career day today in the compound of the West Demerara Secondary School under the theme: Predict your future by creating it. 

The career fair forms part of the calendar of activities planned to celebrate Education Month 2018 which is being recognised under the theme: Education for a Good Life, through Innovation and STEAMS.
According to Senior Guidance and Counselling Officers, Ms. Priscilla Gonsalves, the objectives of the Career Fair include creating a platform for grade nine to eleven learners to access information to assist them to make informed decisions, increase access to training opportunities and equip students with skills and knowledge as they prepare to enter the professional arena.news 20180921 4
Also speaking to the audience of students, educators and stakeholders at the opening ceremony was Regional Education Officer, Ms. Annesta Douglas. She said that it is the interest of the Department of Education to ensure that learners are given the best opportunity to progress into the future.
She said that under the Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) program of the Ministry of Education, career guidance is taught. news 20180921 3However, Ms. Douglas noted that it is important to give learners the opportunity to interact with other stakeholders. Students from schools on the West Bank of Demerara and West Coast of Demerara were in attendance and engaged a number of government and private entities about career and academic opportunities. news 20180921 5
Some of the entities that engaged the students today were the National Library, Bertram Collins College, Georgetown School of Nursing, Ministry of the Presidency, the Guyana Police Force, the Cyril Potter College of Education, the Guyana School of Agriculture, the University of Guyana, Carnegie School of Home Economics, Nations Schools, Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, Board of Industrial Training, Rajiv Gandhi University of Science and Technology, Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association, Demerara Distillers Limited, Cacique Accounting College, Environmental Protection Agency, Guyana Civil Aviation Authority and the Guyana Forestry Commission.
