Region Three honours top students, athletes, teachers and retirees

The Department of Education, Region Three held its Regional Award Ceremony today at the Aracari Hotel. 

According to Regional Education Officer, Ms. Annesta Douglas, the event is held annually to honour top performers at both national and regional examinations, athletes, teachers with unbroken service and retired teachers.
She congratulated the awardees and urged the students to continue to press on as they pursue their academic journey.
Delivering the feature address was Her Excellency First Lady Sandra Granger, who expressed her elation that the region was recognising its top performers as well as persons that would have contributed to the education sector over the years. news 20180917
She said that Guyana is embracing the age of life-long learning and urged those in attendance that they must be prepared to learn new things at any time.
Her Excellency highlighted how technology has developed from generation to generation, whereby today artificial intelligence is being used in areas such as manufacturing.
The First Lady urged the students to think beyond today and to seriously consider what they want to pursue down the road. Additionally, the female students that were honoured were urged by the First Lady to ensure that they complete their secondary education and to progress further since doing so improves their chances at upward mobility. news 20180917 3
Awards were presented to students from Grade Two all the way up to the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) level. Thirteen Grade Two students were awarded for their performances in 2017 and 2018; Five students were awarded for their performances in the Grade Four Assessment in 2017; the top students at the National Grade Six Assessment for 2017 and 2018 were awarded; 12 students were awarded for their performance in the 2017 Grade Nine Assessment and four students were received awards for their performance in the Secondary Competency Certificate Programme.
Additionally, 10 students received awards for their performance at the CSEC level inclusive of the Arts, for 2017 and 2018 as well as the top performers for each secondary school at the CSEC level.
The top performers from the region at the Cyril Potter College of Education were also recognised. Awards were given to the most improved schools at the nursery, primary and secondary level as well as both male and female champion athletes for 2017 and 2018.news 20180917 2
Participants of the Education Management Certificate Programme were recognised while teachers with 27 years and more of unbroken service in education were acknowledged from the nursery, primary and secondary levels. The region also recognised 52 retired teachers who taught in the nursery, primary and secondary levels.
Acknowledging the importance of partnerships to move the education sector forward, the Department of Education also recognised individuals and organisations that have given their support to education process. Those recognised today were: Republic Bank Limited, Leonora Technical and Vocational Training Centre, Guyana Police Force – ‘D’ Division, Guyana Fire Service, West Demerara Secondary School, West Demerara/East Bank Essequibo Chamber of Commerce, Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry, West Demerara Regional Hospital, Regional Sports Committee, CPCE, the Chairman of the Parent Teachers Association Committee, Banks DIH Limited, Ms. Kathlene Armstrong – Leonora Cottage Hospital, Ms. Muriel Moses-Grant, Ms. Myrtle Caldera, Ms. Trevor Williams, Mr. Linden Fowler, Ms. Christina James and Mr. Julian Cambridge.
