UG begins construction of new Mathematics and Science building

- Faculty of Technology rebranded

The University of Guyana has begun construction of a new Mathematics and Science building to improve the service offered by the institution to its students.
At a ‘ground breaking’ ceremony held today at the University’s Turkeyen Campus, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ivelaw Griffith said that the University has the opportunity to serve its students that are taught and nurtured by staff. news 20180724 3
He said that it is within that context the decision to construct the building was birthed and will be a reality through the indispensable support of the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Education.
According to Professor Griffith, the building will be 4000 sq. ft. with two storeys and will be equipped to better serve the students pursuing courses in mathematics and science fields. news 20180724 1
Further, the Vice-Chancellor announced that as of July 9th, 2018 the Faculty of Technology was rebranded to be “The Faculty of Engineering and Technology”. He said that the wisdom behind the name change is to reflect the new focus of the Faculty to accommodate training in areas of oil and gas.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Hon. Nicolette Henry proffered that the construction of the building is in alignment with the national agenda for education which focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
Further, she said that today’s event is significant since it gave visibility to the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. Minister Henry noted that the project is funded by the Government of Guyana in a large way with the financial expenditure of $66M. news 20180724 4
She said that the services of the building will serve the Faculties of Natural Science, Earth and Environmental Science and Agriculture and Forestry.
Minister Henry said that she was pleased to be a part of the collaborative process and that it is important to have faculties that are 21st century relevant.
