Students of North West Secondary School complete Entrepreneurial Training

Thirty-two fifth form students of North West Secondary School completed a three days entrepreneurial training course on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, in Mabaruma. The three days of intense training was facilitated by Mr. Max Persaud, Business and Project Management lecturer at Nations University.

The training which was several months in the making evolved out of negotiations between the Regional Education Officer, Mr. Nigel Richards and the Director of Nations University, Dr. Brian O’Toole. This initiative was just one of several in a budding partnership with Nations University and the Department of Education in a bid to strengthen education capacity and delivery in the Region. What was considered to be the first of its kind is projected to be spread to the other Sub Regions.

At the closing of the training which was deemed hugely successful, the participating students echoed similar sentiments of gratitude for having a whole new world and paradigm opened to them. District Education Officer Mr. Marti De Souza who was moved by the response of the students reminded them that great opportunities await but it is for them to put the knowledge gained to use, stay focused and pursue their goals. Speaking to the participants also was Mr. Calvin Benn, Director of Training at the Bertram Collins College of the Public Service who happened to be on a public awareness campaign. He posited that such knowledge and the entrepreneurial way of thinking are important elements that can also be transferred to the Public Service, in a bid to improve performance and output.

Some of the areas of focus included self-employment as a career choice and the legal procedures involved in entrepreneurship, promoting the business identity and business finance and record keeping. The course was sponsored by Nations University under the auspices of USAID. The participating students will receive an internationally recognized ‘Level 2 Award in Setting up Your Own Business’, accredited by the Association of Business Executives (ABE) of the UK.
