SEBI opens Entrepreneurship and Innovation Conference

news 20180521Guyana’s first Entrepreneurship and Innovation Conference was opened today, providing members in the local business arena an opportunity to network with their international counterparts.

Dean of the School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (SEBI), Professor Leyland Lucas explained the conference stemmed from conversations among stakeholders, on the provision of tools needed to boost and transform free enterprise in Guyana.

“Everybody is talking about entrepreneurship, but do we really understand some of the dynamics that are important to entrepreneurship. We thought we needed to put on this conference to be more than just a talk shop,” Professor Lucas 20180521 1

Established businesses, budding entrepreneurs, students and academics are among those participating. At this morning’s opening, local entrepreneurs were establishing spaces to display their products, which will form part of the day’s activities.

Noting the importance of policymakers at the event, Professor Lucas said it is necessary for them to be part of the sessions, so they can better understand the tools needed to transform the nation for entrepreneurs and innovation to thrive.

University of Guyana’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ivelaw Griffith said the forum provides a more hands-on approach. “The annual conference will not only be conversations, dreaming and doing of entrepreneurship. They will be setting the stage as part of SEBI celebrating entrepreneurs.”news 20180521 2

The two-day event at the Ramada Princess Hotel will include panel discussions, presentations of papers and product displays by members of the business community. Entrepreneurs will be given the opportunity to engage in a “business pitch competition.”
