Youths are Guyana’s greatest assets– Min. Norton – Hundreds turn out for launch of Youth Week – Youths countrywide encouraged to participate in activities

Today, as hundreds of youths from across the country turned out for the launch of National Youth Week 2018, Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton describe them as Guyana greatest assets.

“The achievement of every young person adds to the growth and development of an entire nation. We have young people making strides in every facet of our society and we ought to celebrate them”, the Minister with responsibility for Youths said as he officially launched the week.news 20180520 5

Minister Norton made special mention of Guyana’s youngest female pilot Amber Low, the youngest Forensic Analyst Tamika Henry and eight-year-old Anaya Willabus, an overseas-based Guyanese, the youngest published author in the United States.news 20180520 7

He told those gathered that their youth is an exciting time and encouraged them to invest in themselves, especially in the area of education. The Minister also reiterated that the Coalition Government has and continues to invest heavily in programmes aimed at assisting youths to realise their full potential.news 20180520 11

The development of youth is a “national priority” said the Director of Youth Melissa Carmichael-Haynes. “One cannot mistake the importance of youth work, hence, all should get involved and do their parts ensuring that Guyana’s youths are adequately equipped to not only be leaders of tomorrow but agents of change and development partners of the present”, she underscored.news 20180520 6

‘National Youth Week 2018’ is being observed under the theme “Empowering young people to foster national and community development through innovation.” Today hundreds of young people paraded from the Parliament Building, through the streets of the capital city to Durban Park to mark the opening of a week of activities.news 20180520 8

The events for National Youth Week continue tomorrow with a Youth Forum in Region Ten. A career knowledge fair will be held in Region Five on May 23, while May 23 to 24 will see the hosting of the first ever Youth Business Summit at the Pegasus Hotel. On May 25, there will be an art exhibition aimed at raising awareness on suicide, mental health, crime and violence in Region Six, followed by an ‘Eye of Youth’ exhibition on May 27 in Region Three. Youths are being encouraged to participate in the week of activities.
