Importance of teamwork highlighted during meeting with Minister Henry and staff of the Department of Education.

Minister of Education, Hon. Nicolette Henry, today met with her staff at the Department of Education Office, 68 Brickdam, Georgetown. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss plans for 2018 while reviewing some of the important activities of the Ministry in the past year.

Minister Henry expressed her excitement about the plans for 2018 and told her staff that she is proud of the people which she has to work with to transform the public education system into one that is first 20180115 12

One of the issues discussed included the expenditure of the $41.9B that has been approved for the Ministry in the 2018 budget. Those in attendance were advised that they need to be thoughtful and strategic about the essential service they are to provide to Guyanese.

Minister Henry stressed the importance of teamwork and collaboration between the various departments so that the maximum impact can be made in communities across Guyana, especially those in the far-flung 20180115 10

Further, another matter that was addressed concerned the Schools Welfare Department, particularly the acquisition of a Mobile Unit to assist the unit to carry out its mandate. This Mobile Unit will strengthen the services offered to schools and the nation’s 20180115 14

Other matters discussed included the National Grade Six Examinations, placement of students, the rebranding of the Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Development Unit (MERD) to become the Monitoring, Evaluation and Technical Support Unit (METS) and ensuring that there are Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guide the functioning of each department.

She said that the Ministry of Education has to continue to develop models that will transform the country into one that is second to none in the Caribbean region. She told staff that it is their priority to create social change through their job in order to make a difference in 20180115 8

Acknowledging that Guyana will soon benefit from its incredible oil resources, Minister Henry said that the country is about to embark on a new and transformative sector that will require educators to shape the way Guyanese think so that all can 20180115 7

Minister Henry thanked her staff for the hard work that they have been doing every day to move the education sector forward. She said that each person can learn from their colleague by sharing technical or institutional knowledge and expertise.
