Jubilee Children’s Mashramani Competitions 2016

As Guyana Celebrates its 50th Independence Anniversary it is an occasion for all Guyanese to join in this historic National milestone of our country. The sojourn of this Nation through 1966 – 2016 has been one of struggles, achievements and endeavors.

The Ministry of Education will take the opportunity through the Children’s Mashramani Programme to celebrate our diversity and independence. Special emphasis is therefore being placed on increasing participation and improving the quality of Children’s Costume Parade in 2016 under the theme: ‘‘Celebration of Diversity, Unity and Sovereignty”

Regional competitions have started since January 25 and is expected to culminate with costume parades in Georgetown on February 20, Parade Ground, Region 7 on February 22, and Region 10 February 26.

The objectives of the Mashramani programme are: To promote the Expressive Arts through a National Event; To encourage schools, parents and the communities to work together in a creative, artistic manner; To provide an opportunity for the display of talents by students; and, To foster a sense of pride in our National Identity.
The competitions are held at the Regional and National levels for Primary and Secondary schools. Children at the Nursery level also participate in some of the activities, but only at the Regional level.

The finals of these competitions are held in Georgetown and all Regional Education Districts participate. These activities usually run for a period of three weeks in the month of February and the outstanding performances are recognized and rewarded at all levels.

The Children’s Costume Parade was introduced in 1996. It is a spectacular colourful activity that showcases the talents and creativity that exist among young people. This parade culminates the series of activities and involves approximately four thousand children from schools and youth groups throughout Guyana.

The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) and recently, GT&T are two of the major sponsors of the Jubilee Children’s Mashramani Competition.
