North Rupununi receives sporting gear

― Aiming for well-rounded sports men and women

During a recent visit to the North Rupununi, the Ministry of Communities (MOC) extended a helping hand to the Aranaputa/Upper Burro Burro Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) by delivering a quantity of sports equipment.

The Aranaputa/Upper Burro Burro NDC, based in Region 9, is the newest of NDC’s that has been approved by His Excellency, President David Granger, in 2018.

Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Communities, Nicole Telford, had the pleasure of donating the gear to Virgil Harding, the Chairman of Aranapatu/Upper Burro Burro NDC.

Harding stated that since the establishment of NDC, the council has focused on introducing and gearing their youths in sports activities.

“So far, His Excellency [David Granger], has blessed us with a fenced community ground. We will soon have floodlights…and this sports gear that has been handed over today will take our youths to higher heights.”

Citing the recent success of Annai Secondary at the second annual KFC Goodwill Under-18 Football Tournament, Harding said that was as a result of the dedication and involvement of the region’s youths.

Annai Secondary created history as the second team to capture the Petra Organisation promoted tournament, hosted at the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) ground on Carifesta Avenue, when they defeated Lodge Secondary (Georgetown) just last month.

Upon receiving the sports gear, the Chairman noted, “this is going to even take them further in enhancing the capability to be well-rounded sportsmen and women in the future.”

Some of the equipment handed over included cricket bats and balls, footballs and volleyballs.
