300+ youths participate in 4th Annual Special School Sports

– more trainers to sign onto the NSC

– youths living with disabilities to be exposed to track and field, swimming, cricket

Over three hundred (300) youths with disabilities were highly motivated as they participated in the Fourth Annual Special School Sports hosted at the National Gymnasium.

The competition, which will run for three days, kicked off with cricket and will end with track and field on Friday at the Police Sports 20191127 5

Director of Sport, Christopher Jones, stated that for the 4th year, he is pleased with the increased participation and support.

“The students here are from Regions 2, 10, 6, East Coast, East Bank and Georgetown, competing and participating, and it is all of the various aspects in terms of persons with disabilities. It is a great opportunity, and the National Sports Commission has recognised the need for these young people to have the opportunity to participate in sports,” he said.

The Sport Director mentioned that in 2020, measures would be in place to heighten the number of certified coaches to enable students with disabilities to compete at the national level.

Sport Organiser, Wilton Spencer said the competition gives the youth living with disabilities, the opportunity to reach their goals. He stressed that for the new year, plans would be in the pipeline for more school 20191127 3

“The most recent Special School to be opened is located at Parfaite Harmonie, East Bank of Demerara but they are not yet involved because they only began in September, but we hope to have them involved come 2020. We hope to also have a Special Needs School from Beterverwagting on the East Coast of Demerara onboard too, so all in all, we expect to have the numbers increased,” Spencer explained.

All winners will be rewarded with gifts and trophies and will be selected to continue training sessions for next year’s competition.
