Wakapoa students to get spacious school, $23M approved for upgrade

Over 100 students attending the Wakapoa Secondary School are to be housed in a more spacious environment as the sum of $23M will be expended to extend the Wakapoa Secondary School located in the Wakapoa village, Lower Pomeroon River, Region 2.

Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon, on July 4, announced that the contract was awarded to M. Sukhai Construction Services.

The Wakapoa Secondary School, which also has a dormitory, caters for students residing along the Pomeroon River.

Last month, a $1M bridge was commissioned in the Upper Koria-Yarshirmima area to allow for easy access to the Primary and Secondary schools in the area. Additionally, in March, a $16M walkway equipped with solar lights and sheds was commissioned in the community to link the Myrie and Borada Islands.

These projects are part of the government’s commitment to include the Indigenous peoples in the mainstream of national development. Over the past four years, billions of dollars were spent on the infrastructural development in the hinterland Regions 1, 7, 8 and 9.
