Youth Parliamentarians to be guided by Sitting members

─ 35 secondary school students selected from ten administrative regions

─ 37 students from various faculties of University of Guyana

─ two days to debate several topics starting Aug. 15

Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Barton Scotland, today told the House that sitting members of Parliament have agreed to assist this year’s batch of students who will be participating in the fourth annual Youth parliament.

Dr. Scotland said the youth parliamentarians will be briefed on parliamentary procedures and other practices relating to services in the National Assembly. The Speaker commended the members for the “welcome support” and reminded of the invitation extended to all members of the House, to attend the youth parliament which begins on the August 10 and runs until August 18.

Unlike previous years, the 2018 youth parliament well involve two groups; 35 secondary school students selected from the ten administrative regions and 37 students from various faculties of the University of Guyana.

As a result, two days of debates will be held. On August 15 secondary school students will take to the floor of the House to debate the topics of climate change, non-communicable diseases, restructuring of the education sector and youth representation in governance. While the following day the University students will deliberate climate change, the media and the press, alternative sentencing in keeping with the narcotics drug and psychotropic substances act as a motion on the oil and gas sector.
