186 persons benefit from Kuru Kuru training

─ Programme forms part of Social Cohesion Ministry’s efforts to address youth employment

One hundred and eighty-six youths (186) benefitted from the Youth Entrepreneurial Skills and Training (YEST) Programme at the Kuru Kuru Training Center which forms part of the Ministry of Social Cohesion’s programme to address youth employment.

Ten of the 186 trainees, that graduated on July 20, earned the title of ‘the most outstanding trainee’ in the various programs. Those included were Gershwyn Gordon – Carpentry; Malinda Durant – Data Operations; Shalmal Luter – Electrical Installation; Valeria Albert – Furniture Making; Macey Bowen – Garment Production; Jermaine Yansen – Masonry; Onan Chacon – Motor Vehicle Repairs; Sherwin Hollingsworth – Plumbing; Paul Winfield – Refrigeration & Air Conditioning and Jose Watts – 20180723 12

The Best Graduate for this year, Melinda Durant was visibly moved as she walked across the stage to collect her certificate and awards, to the applause of her family and friends.

The Director of Youth, Mellissa Carmichael-Haynes encouraged the youths “to put their best foot forward as they walked into their destiny.” The centre’s Administrator for the training, Syne Scott during his report stated that despite the challenges the centre continues to move 20180723 14

The Kuru Kuru Training Centre offers training for youth between ages 16 to 25. Interested youths can fill out an application form and take a simple entrance exam to enter the training institute. Trainees are involved in tours, field trips, sports, counselling session, religious activities, art and craft 20180723 13

Carmichael-Haynes emphasised that the Department of Youth and Sport will continue to ensure that youths are educated and empowered to make a difference in their respective communities.
