Region Four Education Dept. hosts book drive

As part of the continued celebration of Education Month, the Region Four Department of Education on Monday spearheaded a book drive which saw the distribution of more than 16,000 books.

The activity, which was hosted at the Triumph, East Coast Demerara, Regional Democratic Council, saw the distribution of books to members of the public, some of whom collected sizeable quantities.
According to Education Officer, Loren Park, this is the second year that the event has been held as part of the Education Month celebration. It also served as a bumper sticker drive. Bumper stickers with the slogan “If you can read this, thank your teacher” was affixed to the bumpers of some vehicles that passed by the book drive.
Park intimated that while last year the event was a huge success, “this year it was bigger.”
The activity, he said, attracted children and adult alike who took time out to sift through piles of books to find the several that met their reading desire. Among those available were: Mathematics text, literacy and reading books, many novels and dictionaries too.
And according to Loren Park, a similar drive is slated for the East Bank of Demerara next week. He noted that a 20-foot container of books will be taken to the East Bank Demerara to facilitate the book distribution drive there.
The books, according to the Education Officer, were donated by an overseas Non Governmental Organisation.
