Department of Culture celebrates Phagwah

The Ministry of Education, Department of Culture Youth and Sport today, hosted its annual observance of Phagwah or 20170211

Phagwah which is ushered in with the burning of Holika, is observed as a national holiday in Guyana and is the Hindu celebration of the spring festival and the dawning of the New Year. The festival was brought to British Guiana by Hindus who arrived as indentured labourers to work on sugar plantations in the early 1840s.

As the date for the February 23 Costume and float parade draws closer various Government Ministries’ representatives gathered to further flesh out plans and confirm their participation in the 2017 float parade. 

They also discussed preparatory works to participate in the illuminated and decorative buildings competition. They were further briefed on the requirements to be part of the possibly the nation’s largest cultural spectacle for 2017.
Specific focus was placed on the rules and regulations for the Decorated Buildings competition and the criteria for the Float Parade.Min. Henry

Guyana and the world is faced with a grave reality that is the increase of teen mothers and the fact that teens within the 15-19 age range are affected by diseases such as HIV and Cervical Cancer.
