Department of Youth hosts capacity building session for Youth Officers

The Government of Guyana has made it clear that the nation’s youth is a national priority and as such the Department of Youth in the Ministry of Education is committed to doing its part by developing comprehensive programs using a strategic multi-sectoral approach aimed at addressing the critical needs of Guyanese youth.

In this regard, the Director of Youth, Ms. Melissa Carmichael and her team have spearheaded a week long training session for the Ministry’s Youth Officers. This capacity building session is being held under the theme “Fostering Youth Development for the 21st Century”.
This activity brings together youth officers from all the administrative regions. It is the belief of the DOY, Ms. Carmichael that for major gains to be realized much more work needs to be done in careful planning, coordination and integration of relevant programmes to ensure the available resources are effectively utilized.
The intention of this session is to equip youth workers with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to effectively and efficiently plan, implement and monitor the programmes that will positively impact the youth workers.
This capacity building engagement is aligned with the Commonwealth’s observance of International Youth Work Week (7-13 November, 2016) under the theme “Empowering Young People through Sports and Arts.” This observance seeks to celebrate the contribution and achievements of youth workers and highlight the importance of recognizing the practice as a profession. It also brings attention to the need to invest more in the education and training of youth workers.
