There was no shutdown of schools in Region Five, Mahaica-Berbice today, despite the strike called by the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU).

An official source disclosed that there were instances where a small percentage of teachers in some of the schools stayed away but the majority of the staff in the various institutions were present maintained a stable environment for the many children who attended.

Around 10:00hrs a group of teachers picketed the office of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) at Fort Wellington West Coast Berbice in relation to the strike demands for about two hours. A downpour of rain forced the strikers to seek shelter at the RDC Compound and they dispersed shortly after the shower had ended.

A team of officials of the Department of Education monitored the situation closely during the day and will continue to do so tomorrow Tuesday with a view to taking whatever action may be necessary to mitigate the effects of the strike.
