Vision Statement
The Guyana Industrial Training Centre will provide access to quality training for individuals at international standards through the use of relevant technologies and methodologies.

Mission Statement
To provide basic and professional training for individuals that will develop their competency to meet labour market needs in the local, regional and globally competitive environment.

Main Objective
To provide training at the craft level in Automotive Mechanic, Carpentry, Electricity, Fitting & Machining, Masonry, Plumbing and Welding.

Motto: Providing Opportunity through training.

Brief History
The Centre has its genesis in the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC). In 1965 the Union felt that with Independence due the next year, emphasis should be placed on manpower development of local people. Consequently, the GTUC sought financial and technical assistance from the American Institute of Free Labour Development (AIFLD) to commence a training programme. AIFLD in turn sought help from USAID, which provided a grant sufficient to construct a training facility and to operate it for three years. That facility is the GITC.
GITC was incorporated on 14th December, 1966 under the Companies Ordinance, as a private, non-profit organization with the mandate of providing industrial education to Guyanese citizens. Located at the corners of Woolford Avenue and Albert Street, the GITC building was constructed in 1968 with USAID funds. It was initially managed by a Board comprised of representatives of the labor movement, the Government of Guyana, and senior management of the institution.
While GITC has maintained its non-profit nature and its mandate, it is no longer a private organization but a government institution. At the handing over of the institution to the government, it was placed under the Ministry of Labor and Social Security but in 1972 it was transferred to the Ministry of Education and has remained there.
PURPOSE……………PHILOSOPHY…………PROGRAMME

PURPOSE
It is the purpose of the Guyana Industrial Training Centre to give meaning to education by relating training to specific occupational goals. In the process it will develop ability, understanding, attitudes, work habits and an appreciation of the meaning of work, as necessary contributions to successful employment.

PHILOSOPHY
The basic philosophy of the Guyana Industrial Training Centre is:-

  • To recognize the value of the individual and the dignity of the human being.
  • To orient training to meet the needs of Industry.
  • To provide through training the equality of opportunity for all.
  • To encourage workers to do the work that suits them best.

PROGRAMME
The Centre is organized to implement the purpose and the philosophy through the following programmes:-

  1. Occupational Training – Seven curricula of one year are offered in occupational training. These lead to the Certificate of Achievement and are designed to prepare trainees for immediate employment or advancement.
  2. Guidance and Counselling – Vocational guidance and counseling are integral parts of the training programme. Each student is guided and assisted to make correct occupational choices, having regard to their interest, abilities, aptitudes, achievement and physical capacity.
  3. Related Studies – Related studies in essential Mathematics, Basic English, Science, Trade Technology and social studies are being offered.
  4. Text books will be furnished by the Centre through its resource centre which is equip with modern and up to date text, manuals journals and internet ready computers for doing research.

The Centre provides for the acquisition of occupational skills through instruction in theory and the practical application of fundamentals in classrooms and shops. Training is designed to stimulate as much as possible the actual job situation.

Student Counselling

Counselling And Guidance
Upon receipt of the results of the aptitude test each applicant is assigned to a counselor.
A Welfare Officer is attached to the Centre and is available to deal with issues affecting trainees.

Graduate Placement
While job placement is not guaranteed, all possible assistance will be given to the graduating trainees in finding appropriate employment.

Accident Insurance
Information on accidental insurance will be given to trainees in their respective shops by the Instructor.

Student Allowance
Trainees will be paid a fourth nightly allowance.

The courses offered at the Centre are as following:-

  1. Furniture Making
  2. Electrical Installation
  3. Automotive Mechanic
  4. Metal Work Engineering
  5. Masonry
  6. Plumbing
  7. Welding
  8. Information Technology

Training begins in January of each year.

Special Courses
The Centre offers short courses on requests from Public and Private Organizations. These courses are funded by the particular organizations requesting same and the trainees are credited by the Centre.

Service available to trainees
The Resource Centre is opened from 8:00 hours to 16:30 hours, Mondays –Fridays. Over 500 volumes of text are available. There is also a variety of journals, periodicals and magazines. Computers with internet access are available.

Entry Requirements

  1. Applicants must be at least fifteen (15) years old to be eligible to attend full-time courses and eighteen (18) years old to attend the evening courses.
  2. For all courses, applicants must have either successfully completed the Secondary Competency Certificate Programme (SCCP) or completed Grade 10 at a Secondary School in Guyana or equivalent if out of Guyana.
  3. Completed application forms must be accompanied with a copy of your birth certificate and two (2) passport sized photographs.

Competency Based Education
An educational system that emphasizes the specifications, learning and demonstration of those competencies (knowledge, skills, behaviours) that are of central importance to a given task, activity or career.

Competency Based Education Training (CBET)
In a CBET system, the unit of progression is mastery of specific knowledge and skills and is learner or participant centered. Two key terms used in competency-based education and training are:

  • Skill- A task or group of tasks performed to a specific level of competency or proficiency which often use motor functions and typically require the manipulation of instruments and equipment.
  • Competency- A skill performed to a specific standard under specific conditions.

CBET differs with the traditional educational system, where the unit of progression is time and it is teacher-centered.
CBET is an institutional process that move education form focusing on what academics believe graduates need to know (teacher-focused) to what students need to know and be able to do in varying and complex situations (student and/or workplace focused).

Work Attachment
Work attachment is an integral part of the Centre’s curricula and as such, all trainees will be required to complete a seven week period of work attachment in industry as a requirement to be awarded a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).

Registration Fees
All trainees will be required to pay an annual registration fee for contingency purposes. This fee is payable at the time of enrollment.

Trainee’s Activities
Trainees are involved in games and competitive sports, Bible Club activities are kept once weekly.
The Students’ Council is responsible for the entire affairs of the student body and makes suggestions/recommendations to administration on various issues.
