NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

NOTICE PAPER NO. 204

Member Asking: Ms Amna Ally, M.P., Opposition Chief Whip

Minister Answering: The Minister of Education

QUESTION

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

  1. Could the Hon. Minister tell this national Assembly whether the IT equipment given to Secondary Schools is in use and functional?
  2. Could the Minister list the schools where IT equipment is not functional?
  3. How soon will such equipment be functional?

(Notice Paper No. 204(Q127 OPP.125) published on 2013-07-03)

ANSWER

  1. IT equipment was provided to 95 secondary schools between 2010 and 2013. It is virtually impossible o say at any specific moment that all the equipment is in use and functional. However, based on feedback received from the regions and visits, over 90% of the IT labs are in use with functioning computers.
  2. Please see attached list.
  3. Once the computers are installed and certified as functional in the schools, it is the responsibility of the various Departments of Education to budget for repairs and maintenance and even replacement of equipment. The MIS Unit does not have the staff to service hundred of schools throughout Guyana, though it may assist from time to time. Indicated timeframe for addressing outstanding issues are given on the attached list.
